What Do I Need To Do To Apply For U.S. Citizenship?

If you’ve held a green card (lawful permanent resident status) for at least five years, you may be eligible to apply for U.S. citizenship through naturalization. If you’re married to a U.S. citizen, you might qualify after just three years. You must also meet additional requirements, including maintaining continuous residence in the United States for the required period, demonstrating good moral character, and showing basic knowledge of English, U.S. history, and how the government functions.

If approved, you gain nearly all the same rights enjoyed by natural-born U.S. citizens, along with the security and stability that citizenship provides.

Melody Busey assists clients nationwide with the naturalization process, helping you understand your eligibility, prepare your application, and navigate the steps ahead.

If you believe you may qualify, now is the time to begin. Contact B&G Law Group, PLLC to start your naturalization journey today.

How Do I Start the Process?

During your first appointment with Melody Busey, she will review your background to confirm whether you meet the requirements to apply for naturalization. If you qualify, Melody will guide you through gathering the information needed to complete the USCIS N-400 form — your official application for U.S. citizenship. If additional documents are required, she will help you identify what’s needed and assist you in collecting everything necessary for a thorough submission.

Melody also provides sample questions and preparation tips to help you feel confident heading into your naturalization interview. Once your materials are ready, she will assist you in completing and submitting the N-400 form to USCIS.

What Will Happen at My Interview?

For your naturalization interview, you’ll need to bring your green card along with a state ID or driver’s license to confirm your identity. During the interview, a USCIS officer will go through the answers you provided on your N-400 form and ask you to confirm that everything is still accurate. If anything has changed since you filed, you’ll need to explain those updates and provide supporting documents if necessary.

Next, the officer will ask you a series of questions similar to those you may have been asked during your green card process. You’ll be asked to read one sentence in English and write a sentence that the officer dictates. You will also take a civics test consisting of 10 questions about U.S. history and government. Answering six correctly is enough to pass.

While the process can seem intimidating, the right preparation makes a huge difference. Melody Busey helps clients understand what to expect, feel confident going into the interview, and approach each step with clarity and calm.
